He created us for life-giving relationship with Him through Jesus Christ.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Key Text<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThe Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.\u201d<\/strong><br><strong>Mark 2:27\u201328 (NKJV)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Introduction<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We live in a culture obsessed with <strong>performance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We often measure ourselves by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">how much we <strong>accomplished<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">how productive we were<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">whether we stayed <strong>busy enough<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">whether others <strong>noticed<\/strong> what we did<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes that same mindset creeps into our spiritual lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We begin to think Christianity is about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">How much we <strong>read<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">How much we <strong>serve<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">How often we <strong>attend<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">How many spiritual <strong>boxes<\/strong> we check<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Jesus reminds us that we were not made for religious performance.<br>We were made for <strong>life in Him<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. God\u2019s Commands Are Gifts, Not Chains<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mark 2:27 \u2014 \u201cThe Sabbath was made for man\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What does \u201cSabbath\u201d mean?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The word <strong>Sabbath<\/strong> comes from the Hebrew word <strong>Shabbat<\/strong>, meaning:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">To <strong>cease<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">To <strong>stop<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">To <strong>rest<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Important Truth<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God created Sabbath as a <strong>gift<\/strong>, not a burden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why did God give Sabbath?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">To teach us we are not <strong>machines<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">To remind us we are not <strong>slaves<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">To call us into fellowship with <strong>Himself<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">To create rhythms of <strong>work, worship, and rest<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Israel had been slaves in Egypt\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Slaves do not <strong>rest<\/strong>.<br>But sons and daughters learn to <strong>rest<\/strong> in the Father\u2019s care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Key Truth<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>God\u2019s commands are expressions of His love, not chains to enslave us.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Application<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some burdens we carry were never placed on us by Jesus.<br>He did not call us to earn His love by performance, but to rest in His grace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. Legalism Misses the Heart of God<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Legalism is\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">not simple obedience, but trusting <strong>rules<\/strong> instead of <strong>relationship<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Hosea 6:6<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cFor I desire mercy and not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is possible to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Attend church regularly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Know Scripture well<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Serve faithfully<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Give generously<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026and still miss the <strong>heart<\/strong> of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Pharisees asked:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat are the rules?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jesus asks:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhere is your heart?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The difference:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><td><strong>The Pharisees<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Jesus<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>External conformity<\/td><td>Inward transformation<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Behavior-focused<\/td><td>Heart-focused<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Tradition-centered<\/td><td>Relationship-centered<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nazarene Holiness Truth<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We believe Jesus came not only to <strong>forgive<\/strong> sinners, but to <strong>transform<\/strong> them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Entire Sanctification means:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Holy Spirit can cleanse the believer\u2019s heart and fill it with <strong>holy love<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Holiness is not merely:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Trying harder<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Looking religious<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Following rules<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Holiness is:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">A heart fully <strong>surrendered<\/strong> to God<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">A life empowered by the <strong>Holy Spirit<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Obedience flowing from <strong>love<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Key Truth<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Legalism says:<\/strong> \u201cI obey, therefore I am accepted.\u201d<br><strong>The Gospel says:<\/strong> \u201cI am accepted through Christ, therefore I obey.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3. Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mark 2:28 \u2014 \u201cThe Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What was Jesus declaring?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was declaring His <strong>divine<\/strong> authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus is saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">I am greater than your <strong>traditions<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">I am greater than your <strong>religious systems<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">I am the fulfillment of what the Sabbath points to<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Sabbath was a shadow\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jesus is the substance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sabbath pointed to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Rest<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Peace<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Restoration<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Freedom<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of these are found fully in <strong>Jesus Christ<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Key Truth<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>True rest is not ultimately found in a calendar; it is found in a Savior.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>4. True Discipleship Flows from Gospel Rest<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Matthew 11:28<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cCome to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jesus invites the weary to:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>come<\/strong> to Him<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Gospel rest means:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">My sins are <strong>forgiven<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">I no longer have to earn God\u2019s <strong>acceptance<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">I belong to <strong>God<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Christ has done for me what I could never do for <strong>myself<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Hebrews 4 reminds us:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are called to enter God\u2019s <strong>rest<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nazarene Application: Holiness and Rest<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We do not pursue holiness through <strong>self-effort<\/strong>.<br>We pursue holiness through <strong>surrender<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Holy Spirit:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Fills<\/strong> surrendered hearts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Sanctifies<\/strong> believers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Empowers<\/strong> obedience<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Produces <strong>holy love<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Key Statement<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Holiness is not striving harder; holiness is abiding deeper.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Life Application<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Because of Jesus\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. I can stop trying to earn what only grace can give.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. I can reject a form of religion that has no joy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3. I can embrace rhythms of worship, rest, and trust.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>4. I can let holiness be rooted in love, not fear.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>5. I can come to Jesus again and again with every burden.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Gospel Invitation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Bible says all have sinned.<br>No amount of religion can remove guilt.<br>No amount of effort can erase sin.<br>But Jesus Christ came for sinners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He lived the life we could not live.<br>He died the death we deserved.<br>He rose again in victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the cross Jesus cried:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIt is finished.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">The debt has been <strong>paid<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">The way has been <strong>opened<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Salvation is offered by <strong>grace<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Romans 5:1<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cTherefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Invitation to Respond<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Am I resting in Christ, or am I striving to prove myself?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Today I need to:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Trust Christ as Savior<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Lay down the burden of spiritual striving<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Surrender my whole heart to God<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Ask the Holy Spirit to sanctify and fill me with holy love<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Reclaim rhythms of worship, rest, and trust<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Follow Jesus with joy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Closing Truth<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I was not made for legalism.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I was not made for endless striving.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I was made for life in Christ.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This week I will:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Rest in Christ<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Trust His grace<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Walk in the Spirit<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Live in holy love<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Follow Jesus with joy<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Personal Notes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Made For Life<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sermon Notes Made for Life Mark 2:27\u201328 Main Truth God did not create us for legalism and religious striving.
