SERMON NOTES
GENESIS TO REVELATION
Week 6: DEUTERONOMY
When the Next Generation Takes the Lead
Primary Scripture: Deuteronomy 6:4–9
Supporting Scriptures: Deuteronomy 10:17–19; 24:17–22; 30:15–20; Matthew 22:34–40
Central Message: Faithfulness to God is more than preserving our traditions. It means choosing His ways, reflecting His character, and preparing others to live faithfully.
1. FAITH CANNOT BE INHERITED LIKE PROPERTY
Read: Deuteronomy 6:4–9
Moses commanded Israel to love God wholeheartedly and teach His commands to their children.
A. Knowing the stories is not the same as knowing the Lord.
- We can teach our children about God, but each person must make a personal decision to follow Him.
- Church attendance and biblical education are important, but they cannot replace a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
B. Faith must be taught in everyday life.
Faith should influence how we:
- Treat people who hurt us.
- Respond when we are angry.
- Tell the truth when it costs us something.
- Help people who cannot repay us.
C. The church’s responsibility is to make __________, not merely church attenders.
2. GOD’S CHARACTER MUST SHAPE HOW WE TREAT PEOPLE
Read: Deuteronomy 10:17–19
God defends the vulnerable and commands His people to love the foreigner.
A. Holiness affects more than what happens in worship.
Our relationship with God should influence our treatment of others.
B. Compassion grows when we allow God to work through our experiences.
Compassion is more than feeling sorry for someone. It means being willing to __________ when we see a need.
C. A holy church should reflect God’s character through:
- Love
- Justice
- Mercy
- Integrity
3. GOD’S PEOPLE MUST DECIDE WHAT WILL SHAPE THEIR FUTURE
Read: Deuteronomy 30:15–20
Moses placed a choice before Israel: life and blessing or death and destruction.
A. Every culture teaches people what to value.
Christians must live faithfully in the world without allowing the world to determine what faithfulness means.
B. Good intentions are not enough.
A faithful future is built through actual __________, not simply good intentions.
C. Faithfulness sometimes requires change.
We must hold firmly to the truth of the gospel while remaining willing to change whatever prevents us from faithfully sharing it with the next generation.
4. THE NEXT GENERATION NEEDS MORE THAN OUR BUILDINGS AND STORIES
Read: Deuteronomy 6:6–9
A. A church can preserve its history without preparing its future.
Our history matters, but remembering the past must never replace fulfilling our calling today.
B. Discipleship requires relationships.
Think of someone who helped you grow in your faith.
Name one way that person influenced you:
C. Faithful leadership prepares others to serve.
The real test is not whether the next generation does everything our way, but whether they faithfully follow the God we taught them to know.
5. JESUS BRINGS THE MESSAGE OF DEUTERONOMY INTO FOCUS
Read: Matthew 22:34–40
Jesus summarized God’s commandments in two great principles:
- Love the Lord your God with all your __________, soul, and mind.
- Love your __________ as yourself.
A. Our relationship with God must shape our relationships with people.
We must speak biblical truth while treating people with dignity and compassion.
B. The Holy Spirit empowers us to live a holy life.
In the Nazarene understanding of sanctification, God does more than forgive our sins. He also desires to cleanse and empower His people for a life of wholehearted love.
Sanctification is God’s gracious work that enables us to surrender more fully to Him and live a life increasingly governed by __________.
