Made for Life

Mark 2:27–28

Main Truth

God did not create us for legalism and religious striving. He created us for life-giving relationship with Him through Jesus Christ.

Key Text

“The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.”
Mark 2:27–28 (NKJV)

Introduction

We live in a culture obsessed with performance.

We often measure ourselves by:

  • how much we accomplished
  • how productive we were
  • whether we stayed busy enough
  • whether others noticed what we did

Sometimes that same mindset creeps into our spiritual lives.

We begin to think Christianity is about:

  • How much we read
  • How much we serve
  • How often we attend
  • How many spiritual boxes we check

But Jesus reminds us that we were not made for religious performance.
We were made for life in Him.

1. God’s Commands Are Gifts, Not Chains

Mark 2:27 — “The Sabbath was made for man…”

What does “Sabbath” mean?

The word Sabbath comes from the Hebrew word Shabbat, meaning:

  • To cease
  • To stop
  • To rest

Important Truth

God created Sabbath as a gift, not a burden.

Why did God give Sabbath?

  • To teach us we are not machines
  • To remind us we are not slaves
  • To call us into fellowship with Himself
  • To create rhythms of work, worship, and rest

Israel had been slaves in Egypt…

Slaves do not rest.
But sons and daughters learn to rest in the Father’s care.

Key Truth

God’s commands are expressions of His love, not chains to enslave us.

Application

Some burdens we carry were never placed on us by Jesus.
He did not call us to earn His love by performance, but to rest in His grace.

2. Legalism Misses the Heart of God

Legalism is…

not simple obedience, but trusting rules instead of relationship.

Hosea 6:6

“For I desire mercy and not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.”

It is possible to:

  • Attend church regularly
  • Know Scripture well
  • Serve faithfully
  • Give generously

…and still miss the heart of God.

The Pharisees asked:

“What are the rules?”

Jesus asks:

“Where is your heart?”

The difference:

The Pharisees                                            Jesus
External conformityInward transformation
Behavior-focusedHeart-focused
Tradition-centeredRelationship-centered

Nazarene Holiness Truth

We believe Jesus came not only to forgive sinners, but to transform them.

Entire Sanctification means:

The Holy Spirit can cleanse the believer’s heart and fill it with holy love.

Holiness is not merely:

  • Trying harder
  • Looking religious
  • Following rules

Holiness is:

  • A heart fully surrendered to God
  • A life empowered by the Holy Spirit
  • Obedience flowing from love

Key Truth

Legalism says: “I obey, therefore I am accepted.”
The Gospel says: “I am accepted through Christ, therefore I obey.”

3. Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath

Mark 2:28 — “The Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

What was Jesus declaring?

He was declaring His divine authority.

Jesus is saying:

  • I am greater than your traditions
  • I am greater than your religious systems
  • I am the fulfillment of what the Sabbath points to

The Sabbath was a shadow…

Jesus is the substance

The Sabbath pointed to:

  • Rest
  • Peace
  • Restoration
  • Freedom

All of these are found fully in Jesus Christ.

Key Truth

True rest is not ultimately found in a calendar; it is found in a Savior.

4. True Discipleship Flows from Gospel Rest

Matthew 11:28

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

Jesus invites the weary to:

come to Him

Gospel rest means:

  • My sins are forgiven
  • I no longer have to earn God’s acceptance
  • I belong to God
  • Christ has done for me what I could never do for myself

Hebrews 4 reminds us:

We are called to enter God’s rest.

Nazarene Application: Holiness and Rest

We do not pursue holiness through self-effort.
We pursue holiness through surrender.

The Holy Spirit:

  • Fills surrendered hearts
  • Sanctifies believers
  • Empowers obedience
  • Produces holy love

Key Statement

Holiness is not striving harder; holiness is abiding deeper.

Life Application

Because of Jesus…

1. I can stop trying to earn what only grace can give.

2. I can reject a form of religion that has no joy.

3. I can embrace rhythms of worship, rest, and trust.

4. I can let holiness be rooted in love, not fear.

5. I can come to Jesus again and again with every burden.

Gospel Invitation

The Bible says all have sinned.
No amount of religion can remove guilt.
No amount of effort can erase sin.
But Jesus Christ came for sinners.

He lived the life we could not live.
He died the death we deserved.
He rose again in victory.

On the cross Jesus cried:

“It is finished.”

That means:

  • The debt has been paid
  • The way has been opened
  • Salvation is offered by grace

Romans 5:1

“Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Invitation to Respond

Am I resting in Christ, or am I striving to prove myself?

Today I need to:

  • Trust Christ as Savior
  • Lay down the burden of spiritual striving
  • Surrender my whole heart to God
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to sanctify and fill me with holy love
  • Reclaim rhythms of worship, rest, and trust
  • Follow Jesus with joy

Closing Truth

I was not made for legalism.

I was not made for endless striving.

I was made for life in Christ.

This week I will:

  • Rest in Christ
  • Trust His grace
  • Walk in the Spirit
  • Live in holy love
  • Follow Jesus with joy
